AJEA: Entry Categories

1. Governance and Development Reporting

This award goes to journalists whose stories had an impact in contributing to the country’s sustainable development, promoting national values and principles of governance, upholding integrity, the fight against corruption, promotion of the rule of law, and ethical practices. Stories include preservation of human rights, population issues as well as migration, urbanisation, housing and infrastructure development and, the extractive industry, arts and culture, poverty alleviation, civic engagement, education, government policies and political processes, and compensation for violated individuals or communities among others.

2. Gender and Inclusivity Reporting

This award goes to journalists whose stories demonstrate an understanding of issues that seek to promote gender equity, equality, and gender empowerment. In addition, stories promoting gender inclusivity and mainstreaming in decision making and implementation of gender sensitive commitments.

3. Illustrator of the Year

This award goes to journalists whose work displays artistic creativity and presentation through cartoons and illustrations. Quality of work and an in-depth representation of topical issues of public interest.

4. Best Radio Production

This award goes to a media house whose crew creatively produce radio show, programme or feature professionally done and has demonstrated impact on a public interest matter. It recognizes the research, story development, interview and production technics, music and effects, and postproduction that go into the making of an effective and engaging radio production.

5. Best Television Production

This award goes to a media house whose team creatively produce television show, programme or feature professionally done and has demonstrated impact on a public interest matter. It recognizes the research, story development, interview and production technics, music and effects, and postproduction that go into the making of an effective and engaging radio production.

6. Press Freedom

This award will be presented to a person(s), institution or organization (public or private), or media house nominated for their contribution to press freedom in Kenya. Journalists, Editors and media stakeholders can nominate candidates / institutions backed by evidence (actions, activities, media articles etc). Upload proof of outstanding, consistency in defending Press Freedom in Kenya.

7. Health and Medical Reporting

This award goes to journalists whose interpretative stories go beyond medical terms to inform the public on health and medical issues, and Social Health Insurance including emerging challenges of substance abuse and rehabilitation, and mental health disorders.

8. Sports Reporting

This award goes to journalists whose stories show exceptional coverage of sports events, profiles, analysis of sports related issues, development of sporting industry, and investigations into sports organisations.

9. Agriculture and Food Security

This award goes to journalists whose stories demonstrate a deep understanding of agriculture and food security dynamics including providing in-depth reporting on key issues such as policies, research and innovations, improving agricultural productivity, market dynamics, climate change, access to inputs and markets and social-economic aspects.

10. Podcast of the Year

This award goes to journalists whose digital audio or audio-visual file is outstanding in discussing a pertinent public issue, presented on an online platform.

11. Videographer of the Year

This award goes to videographers who record captivating images that engage audiences. Such images should tell the story and depict the context and perspective of the events captured. Videographers must submit at least two (2) videos of different events or stories.

12. Photojournalist of the Year

This award goes to photographers who record captivating images that engage audiences. Such images should tell the story and depict the context and perspective of the events captured. Photographers must submit a portfolio of at least 6 published photographs from different events or a story sequence.

13. Digital Economy and innovation reporting

This award goes to journalists with outstanding stories on technological advancement, innovations and creative use of information, communication and technological applications.

14. Financial and Business Reporting

This award goes to journalists whose stories capture developments in the creative economy including MSMES as envisioned in the government plans.

15. Best Investigative Story

This award goes to journalists whose stories are well researched and that go beyond the ordinary, on matters of public interest.

16. Environment Restoration and Climate Change Reporting

This award goes to journalists whose stories that demonstrate in-depth knowledge on new developments in environmental conservation, marine economy, tree restoration, and climate change and its impact on human activities.

17. Tourism Reporting Award

This award goes to journalists whose stories inform and engage the public on the dynamic and evolving tourism industry. The stories demonstrate exceptional skill in reporting on the trends, challenges, and opportunities within tourism, culture, and environmental impacts of travel. The stories highlight the power of Kenya’s tourism as both an economic driver and a cultural exchange platform.

18. Animal Welfare Reporting

This award goes to stories focused on promotion of domestic animal welfare, threats to domestic animals and their treatment in the context of emerging issues such as climate change, care for work animals, pandemics and food security in the country. Story submissions for this category must be thought-provoking and have potential to prompt action.

19. National Cohesion / Developing Story Reporting

This award goes to outstanding stories with the ability to promote harmony and peaceful co-existence among Kenya’s diverse communities, inform, contextualize, and illuminate high stakes on security and counter terrorism, public interest matters, while adhering to the highest standards of ethics. Developing story entries should demonstrate excellence in providing clear, timely, and insightful coverage of events as they unfold, offering both immediate updates and nuanced analysis of complex situation in the face of evolving developments.
